The list just doesn’t end.

Or would you like your kids instead to be really good at communicating in English, to have great fun learning it because they understand what they are saying, and, as a result, to get awesome scores in their exams?

It’s your choice, pak/bu. I’m a parent of two daughters and I have chosen the latter. They speak English with me everyday because they love it.

First of all, let me apologize to pak Mufli for being so rude to him. I can see (now, not before) that my reply just got handled later than normal.

Second, I don’t know where those Indonesian textbooks for students got their 16 tenses from, but certainly not from English linguistics/grammar. Don’t believe me? No problem. Just read the following books written by real, respected linguists/grammarians:

* Eckersleys’ A Comprehensive English Grammar
* Swan’s Practical English Usage
* Thomson & Martinet’s A Practical English Grammar
* Crystal’s The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language
* Quirk/Greenbaum/Leech/Svartvik’s A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language

You can see for yourself that there is no such thing as the ‘Past Future Tense’. All I’m trying to say is, English is not as difficult or as complicated as your teachers (yes, I’m Indonesian and a teacher myself) make it out to be. Read my posts again. I wrote up there: “Saya pribadi lebih memilih metodologi yang lebih mudah dipelajari oleh siswa.”

You learn English not by memorizing the ‘rules’. You learn by understanding it. Putting English sentences into 16 neat little boxes and calling them ‘tenses’ might be nice and easy for the teachers, but not for their students. And it’s just plain wrong, anyway. Again, read the books above and REALLY understand English.

Am I being blocked because of my comments? I can’t access your site and I can see that my last comment is not even here. Wow! Apparently you’re one of those people who can’t take criticisms very well, huh? No wonder you’re still in the Stone Age in terms of English teaching and learning!

I can only feel sorry for you, pak Mufli. I’m so happy I didn’t have you as my English teacher, and I’d be delighted to have you in one of my teacher training classes

Thank you for your response, pak Mufli. I guess what I am saying is that languages evolve. Just like poeple and teaching methodologies do. Apa yang dulu (mungkin) dianggap sebagai satu-satunya cara untuk belajar English tenses, bisa jadi tidak lagi sesuai dengan the latest linguistic and pedagogic development.

Saya pribadi lebih memilih metodologi yang lebih mudah dipelajari oleh siswa. Pikirkan dulu ARTI yang akan disampaikan, baru gunakan FORM yang tepat. Tidak sebaliknya. Tentunya tanpa menghafalkan ke-16 betuk “tenses” seperti yang saya lakukan di sekolah dulu
